Few fixtures on the IPL calendar have grown as quickly, or as intensely, as CSK vs LSG. It’s a matchup that shouldn’t really work on paper — one side is the league’s most decorated franchise, dripping with yellow-shirted history, while the other has only existed since 2022. And yet, every time Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants meet, something dramatic happens. A record chase. A last-ball finish. A teenager announcing himself with a fifty off thirteen balls. This rivalry doesn’t need decades to feel important — it’s been intense from the very first ball.
If you’ve searched “CSK vs LSG” hoping to understand why this fixture keeps trending, or you’re just trying to catch up before the next meeting, here’s the full story: the history, the head-to-head numbers, the biggest moments, and what makes this one of the most watchable clashes in the tournament right now.
A Rivalry Born in 2022, Already Producing Classics
Lucknow Super Giants walked into the IPL in 2022 as one of two expansion franchises, alongside Gujarat Titans. Nobody expected them to immediately trouble a five-time champion like CSK. But that’s more or less what happened. Across their first seven meetings, the two sides have gone back and forth so evenly that, heading into their most recent clash, the head-to-head record sat locked at 3-3, with one game washed out by rain in Lucknow in 2023.
That’s a remarkably tight split for a rivalry this young. Compare it to some of the IPL’s more lopsided newer fixtures, and CSK vs LSG stands out as genuinely competitive from day one — not a case of an established powerhouse simply steamrolling the new kid on the block.
The Numbers So Far
Here’s a snapshot of how this rivalry has unfolded through IPL 2026:
- Total meetings: 7 completed (plus one no-result)
- Head-to-head: 3 wins apiece, dead level
- Highest team total: CSK’s 217/7 at Chepauk in April 2023
- Lowest team total: LSG’s 125/7 in the 2023 rain-hit game at Ekana
- Best individual innings: Marcus Stoinis’ unbeaten 124 off 63 for LSG, chasing down 213 at Chepauk in 2024
- Venue split at Chepauk (CSK’s home): 1-1 across two completed games — proof that even Chennai’s spin-friendly fortress isn’t automatic home advantage against Lucknow
What jumps out immediately is how often the team batting second has won. LSG’s three victories have all come while chasing, and their pursuit of 213 at Chepauk in 2024 remains one of the most audacious run-chases the ground has witnessed. CSK’s home advantage, usually built on slow, low, spin-friendly pitches, hasn’t been the fortress it typically is against most other opponents.
Match 53, IPL 2026: CSK Level the Score at Chepauk
The most recent chapter came on May 10, 2026, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, and it had almost everything a T20 fan could ask for. CSK won the toss and chose to bowl — usually the go-to move at Chepauk — but LSG had other plans. Josh Inglis, fresh off returning from injury, tore into the bowling from ball one, smashing his way to 85 off 33 deliveries as LSG raced to 91/1 inside the powerplay, their best-ever powerplay total in the competition.
For a while, a total north of 240 looked realistic. Then CSK hit back hard. Jamie Overton was the difference-maker, dismissing Rishabh Pant and Inglis in the same over before wrapping up figures of 3/36, as LSG slid from 91/1 to 130/5. A defiant stand between Himmat Singh and Shahbaz Ahamad — LSG’s best-ever seventh-wicket partnership in the IPL — hauled the total up to 203/8.
Chasing 204, CSK looked shaky early before Urvil Patel produced one of the innings of the season: 65 off just 23 balls, including a stretch of six sixes and a four off seven consecutive deliveries. It was enough to get Chennai over the line by five wickets with four balls to spare, their third straight win of the campaign, and it levelled the head-to-head at 3-3 for the first time in the rivalry’s history.
Match 59, IPL 2026: LSG Answer Back in Lucknow
Five days later, on May 15, the two sides met again — this time at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow — and LSG made sure the celebrations in Chennai didn’t last long. Batting first, CSK managed 187/5, before Mitchell Marsh produced a sensational 90 off just 38 balls to power LSG home with seven wickets and a full 20 balls to spare. It was one of Marsh’s finest IPL knocks and pushed him into the top six of that season’s Orange Cap standings, while nudging LSG’s disappointing playoff hopes back into some kind of shape, and knocking CSK a spot down the table in the process.
That result flipped the head-to-head back in LSG’s favour, a reminder of just how quickly momentum swings in this fixture.
Why This Fixture Keeps Delivering
A few things make CSK vs LSG genuinely compelling beyond the raw results:
The mentor-versus-student subplot. With Rishabh Pant leading LSG and MS Dhoni still part of the CSK setup, there’s a layer of narrative most IPL fixtures simply don’t have. Pant coming up against the franchise and the captain he grew up idolising adds real emotional stakes.
Contrasting identities. CSK still leans on composure, experience, and situational awareness — the “Thala” way of grinding out totals under pressure. LSG, by contrast, plays fearless, high-risk cricket built around explosive top-order hitting. When those two philosophies collide, you tend to get either a batting carnival or a tense slow-burn — rarely something dull.
No knockout history yet. Interestingly, all seven meetings between these two have come in the league stage. Despite LSG reaching the Eliminator in both 2022 and 2023, and CSK contesting the 2023 final, their paths have never crossed in the knockouts. That’s arguably the one missing ingredient — a genuine do-or-die CSK vs LSG battle with a place in the playoffs on the line. Given how tightly matched the two sides have proven, that game, whenever it happens, could be an all-timer.
The Bottom Line
CSK vs LSG has quickly become one of the IPL’s most balanced modern rivalries — three wins each through seven completed matches, a string of record-breaking individual performances, and a habit of swinging results in either team’s favour within the space of a single week. Add in the Pant-Dhoni storyline and the tactical contrast between an old-guard powerhouse and a fearless new franchise, and it’s easy to see why this fixture generates so much buzz every time it comes around on the schedule.
If the last two meetings in IPL 2026 are anything to go by, don’t expect the next one to be any less dramatic.
